Public Transport

Public transport is essential to the functioning and growth of towns and cities, providing access to work and services on an relatively low cost and equitable basis. In Dublin, nearly 3,000,000 journeys each week are made by Dublin Bus, over 500,000 by LUAS, nearly 400,000 by DART and over 250,000 by commuter rail. If these journeys could not be made, or could only be made by private car, the city would rapidly cease to function. Whilst there is an extensive network of inter-urban bus routes, and intra-urban city based networks in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford, operations in other urban areas are more limited.

Rural Transport

Public transport is equally important in rural areas, and in recent years has been promoted through the Rural Transport Initiative and more recently the Rural Transport Programme. The Special Group on Public Service Numbers and Expenditure Programmes (An Bord Snip Nua) recommended that the government cease funding this programme, but funding has been maintained following agreement of the revised programme for government. TTSRA has experience in the creation and restructuring of both existing rural transport services and those organisations operating within the sector. TTRSA and our associates have experience of a wide range of alternative forms of operation, and can assist by providing advice, and if necessary developing restructuring and operational strategies, and business plans.

Stops and Interchanges

TTRSA have considerable experience in the:

  • analysing the optimal location of stops and interchange, taking into account catchment, facilities and road safety considerations;
  • ensuring that stops and interchanges are accessible to all users; and,
  • design of bus stops and interchanges, both within urban and rural areas, ensuring integration with the streetscape and site, and minimising potential conflict between the users of different forms of transport.
Bus Priority

TTRSA staff have been involved in all aspect of bus route priority and green route design from initial routeing decisions, conceptual design, consultation, detailed design, preparation of contract documentation, tendering and client's representative on site. We would be happy to provide technical advice on bus priority projects, including providing advice to local authorities and other organisations, or working as part of a team on such projects.

Park and Ride

Park and Ride (P&R) is the term used to describe systems where people park their cars, motorcycles or bicycles remotely from their ultimate destination and generally use public transport, in the form of bus or rail, to continue their journey. P&R provides benefits in terms of allowing the use of town and city centre sites to be maximised and reducing the impacts of development on the existing transport networks. One bus with 50 passengers uses considerable less road space at peak times than the equivalent number of cars.

Examples of P&R in Ireland include:

  • the Black Ash bus based site in Cork;
  • long-stay parking facilities at Dublin Airport;
  • the University College Cork P&R service from two remote car parks;
  • those attached to the LUAS system in Dublin;
  • numerous stations with large car parks on the Dublin commuter rail network;
  • event based services such as those for OXEGEN, the Volvo Ocean Race and previously the Ryder Cup; and,
  • seasonal services, for example at Christmas.

TTRSA have considerable experience in all aspects of bus based P&R development from the initial conceptual design of systems and sites, though the development of route upgrades and service profiles, to the tender for, and evaluation of, bus operators. Our staff were heavily involved in the development of the recently opened system in Scarborough and have been advising a major university on bus route design and bus operator tendering in relation to their recently constructed P&R site.
